Just a little love

*

Sun or rain

it’s all the same

when you’ve chosen to live

in-between

Full head, clear heart

you’ll never start

down undiscovered roads

until the slate is clean

Realities we can’t find

and perfect lines

new stories

hidden behind safeguards

There’s no shame

when you work to tame

the misty hell of

cherry-stained fears

Begin chasing stars

but watch out for cars

you won’t disappear

when you give the secrets away

Should you choose to pass

down this way again

more than a mere friend

remains…

to welcome you home

* * *

“The greatest thing…”

All cool,

A Review of Forgive Me, Alex by Lane Diamond

Blurbtastic Beginnings

Tony Hooper stands in shadow across the street, one amongst many in the crowd of curiosity-hounds gathered to watch a monster’s release. Seventeen years after Mitchell Norton, “the devil,” terrorized Algonquin, Illinois on a spree of kidnapping, torture and murder, the authorities release the butcher from psychiatric prison.

Tony longs to charge across the street to destroy Norton—no remorse—as if stepping on a cockroach. Only sheer force of will prevents his doing so.

“The devil” walks the world again. What shall Tony do about it? Aye, what indeed.

After all, this is what he does. It’s who he is. “The devil” himself long ago made Tony into this hunter of monsters. What a sweet twist of fate this is, that he may still, finally, administer justice.

Will FBI Special Agent Linda Monroe stop him? She owes him her life, so how can she possibly put an end to his?

Tony Hooper and Mitchell Norton battle for supremacy, with law enforcement always a step away, in this story of justice and vengeance, evil and redemption, fear and courage, love and loss.

My Review

One sentence and I was hooked.

I never expected to be a killer.” Muses Tony Hooper.

My first introduction to Tony broke my heart and horrified me all at once. As a mother of four, I wanted to grab him and scream—No! To tell him everything would be just fine, but as I continued to read I quickly realized the tragedy that befell him in 1975 was only the beginning.

“And whom shall I fear if not the devil, the grim torturer who conquered my aspirations and left me without a recognizable world of my own?” He later continues.

Now, you’d think when Lane Diamond introduces the devil that completed the destruction of young Tony’s life in 1978 that I’d want to rip the pages out. I mean, who really goes out of their way to look inside the head of serial killer? The problem, Diamond does such an incredible job at building Mitchell Norton’s slow descent into madness that I couldn’t put the freakin’ book down!

I rarely read books that jump back and forth between characters and time periods. The reason being—it’s extremely difficult to create a cohesive, linear plot that the reader can follow without confusion until the end. Again, Diamond shows his mastery of the pen. Not once did I have to go back to say, “wait, did I miss something?”

Having said that, I certainly didn’t expect the ending, but one thing’s for sure, I’m definitely sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the release of Diamond’s second book in the series, The Devil’s Bane.

Of the many books I’ve read over the past 39 years, few have warranted a second read. However, I was so bent on getting to the end of Forgive Me, Alex—to find out if Tony received (or more accurately sought out) the justice he so obviously deserved—that I had to go back and read it again to savor the masterful writing. You know what happened the second time around? I blew through it again, even knowing the ending.

“I’ve made a mess of me

The person that I’ve been lately

Ain’t who I wanna be
But you stay here right beside me

And watch as the storm blows through”
